The region of Aljarafe-Doñana is located in the southwestern boundary of the province of Seville, in a land which has historically enjoyed a strategic geographic situation among several Andalusian provinces. This privileged location forms a territory with a landscape full of contrasts and nature, and together with the history of the region, it defines a list of towns with natural and cultural appeal.

With a total extension of 1.492 square kilometers, that represents the 10 per cent of the province of Seville, the region brings together a set of 16 towns (Albaida del Aljarafe, Almensilla, Aznalcázar, Benacazón, Bollullos de la Mitación, Carrión de los Céspedes, Castilleja del Campo, Huévar del Aljarafe, Isla Mayor, Olivares, Pilas, La Puebla del Río, Salteras, Sanlúcar la Mayor. Umbrete and Villamanrique de la Condesa), where it gathers a population of 108.171inhabitants (2011).

The average number of people per town beats the 5.000, although the reality is different. Only three towns (Pilas, La Puebla del Río y Sanlúcar la Mayor) possess more than 11.000 inhabitants, and they sum, together with Olivares -with more than 8.000- almost the 50 per cent of the total population. On the other hand, we find five towns that do not reach 3.000 inhabitants, as Albaida del Aljarafe, Carrión de los Céspedes, Castilleja del Campo, Huévar del Aljarafe and Villamanrique de la Condesa,  and other that are about the 6.000, as Bollullos de la Mitación, Umbrete and Isla Mayor.

Therefore, three towns with a high population density stand out in this territory. They are the head of the region, whereas there is, on one hand, a group of medium-sized towns, with a relevant growth, and on the other hand, a third group, formed by small villages.

The Northern side of the region is formed by towns historically linked to the Sevillian Aljarafe and thet traditionally work in olive and grapevine cultivation, with an important food and agriculture industry which is characteristic in the province and in the whole Andalusia. In the last years, favored by the growth of Seville metropolitan area  and by the dynamic economic diversification of the territory, the service sector and the building are relieving the agricultural activity historically established.

The Southern zone, constituted by the five towns insde the Doñana Natural Space, offers total different characteristics. Their integration in this area (in fact, the 30 per cent of the Doñana superficial extension belongs to our region), promotes its tourist and natural appeal. Mainly, this territory works in agriculture, based in the rice production, - with the most important rice extension in Spain- an irrigated land, fruit trees and important forest masses of pine and mediterranean woods. It is significant to highlight that the Aljarafe-Doñana rice fields fulfill an important function in the Doñana ecosystem, since they feed birds.
